Course Overviews
Short Course
XTERRA Auckland trail run series Course Distance:
Approx 8km

Course Overview:

Starting form the Upper Mangitawhiri camp site head out of the camp site via grass track towards Mangatangi Hill Rd. you veer right into the river track.  This is a fantastic little track but its use will depend on rainfall in the week prior.  There are a couple of little stream crossings to get your feet wet on this track and some great bush coverage.  You pop out on the Moumoukai Valley rd and turn left onto Manning rd.

You will then make another left onto a mountain bike track and head up that track and end up on a track running parallel with Mangatangi Hill Rd.  At the end of that track you will pop out onto Mangatangi Hill Rd and follow it back to the camp site to finish.  The surface is varied from mud to water, rocks and gravel roads.  The course is undulating but your only real uphill section is when you go up the mountain bike track off Manning Rd.

At the end of that track you will pop out onto Mangatangi Hill Rd and follow it back to the camp site to finish.  The surface is varied from mud to water, rocks and gravel roads.  The course is undulating the whole way.

Course Overview

XTERRA Auckland trail run series This is a tough one and will sort the hard men out.  Starting form the Upper Mangitawhiri camp site head out of the camp site and turn right up the gravel rd.  You will get onto Waterline Rd and follow this road for about 3.5km.  You will then get to Ernies Track on your right.  This is the track you will be on for the next 5km.  The track is muddy rooty and very technical.

Watch for roots as it would be easy to roll an ankle.  The track is fantastic and tough.  You will cross a small stream along the way just before you start to climb.  And you will find yourself going up hill for some time.  You will eventually reach a high point of nearly 500m and you will feel every metre.  But don’t forget to look at the view…its amazing!!!  You follow Ernies until you pass Piggotts campsite.

You will get onto a gravel road for a short time and then shoot left onto Rata Ridge track.  This is a loop track and is approximately 4km long.  You will then get back onto Lilburne Road track and it is all down hill from here!!!  Follow this road across the dam wall and back down to the capsite.

Course Markings
Course MarkingsIt wouldn’t be a Total Sport event unless you were following hanging white tape and red arrows on a white corflute backing.  While course are well marked you will still need to keep your eyes open out there.

We need to stress that you need to stick to the trail you are on unless you are directed off by an arrow!

Key intersections will be clearly marked to make life easy for you!

Course Safety
We strongly recommend that all competitors come to these events sensibly prepared as some of these courses are very tough and weather conditions can be extremely changeable.

We recommend running with a camelbak loaded with up to 2L of water and/or Balance along with Balance squeezy’s and other nutritional nibbles.  You can expect to be away from base for a decent period of time at these events!

While event medics will be at each event & competitors may encounter on course marshals with first aid on them it also pays to be safety conscious and carry items like a basic first aid kit, cell phone, whistle and additional warm clothing.
